Ohio Achievement Assessment

Mt. Orab Elementary 3rdGraders will be taking the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) in Reading. The OAA is aligned with Ohio’s academic content standards and measures what students are able to do in reading. The results of the fall assessment help teachers plan instruction and intervention for the rest of the school year.   Scores fall in five categories: Limited, Basic, Proficient, Accelerated, and Advanced. Teachers will plan interventions for students who score in the Limited and Basic categories and closely monitor their achievement.

Several weeks after the test, you will receive a family report with your child’s scores. This report explains your child’s strengths and weaknesses, what the results mean and the next steps to take to help your child achieve. If you want more information on the OAA you can go to www.success.ode.state.oh.us. You can see actual test questions, read more about content standards and the assessment program, and find resources to help your child achieve.

Remember that the test measures what your child should be able to do by the end of the 3rdgrade. Many children who score below proficient in October go on to score in the proficient range or above on the spring assessment.

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before testing! Help your child relax about testing by reminding him that the fall test helps teachers plan instruction for the rest of the year. One of the best things you can encourage your child to do it to take his/her time on the test. Students have two and one half hour to complete the test. It’s not a race! Carefully reading the directions and the reading selections will help your child achieve a better score.

If you have any questions about the OAA or your child’s achievement in reading, feel free to give me a call. You can reach me at 444-2528, Ext. 23119
